Dumpster Diving, Tummy Bugs, and Other Ways God Showed Up:
A Lesson on Faith and Family
I know, it’s a long title, but so much happened at VBS, I don’t know where to start. Our theme this week was―Life is wild, God is good! It was a wild week indeed.
I guess I will start at the beginning: Dumpster Diving.
At the end of the first day of VBS, a young friend came running back in the door long after all the other campers had left. He had just remembered that he had left his retainer in a napkin at snack time. That particular trash had been carried out to the dumpster earlier which led to a great adventure. The next 15 minutes were spent sorting through soggy crackers, strawberries, and used napkins. After the first trip through the trash, the retainer was still lost. We offered up a prayer and started over, and much to our surprise, the retainer was found! The verse for that day: ―The Lord is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. (Nahum 1:7) When life is messy, God is good!
On Tuesday, we learned about the plagues on Egypt, found in Exodus. Although we had already experienced some absences due to illness, Wednesday morning was the day we really started feeling the effects of the
tummy bug; our own personal plague.. We had several leaders and teens out that day, and we had to start rearranging staff to get it all covered. Once again, God provided and we had new workers show up at just the
right time. Our lesson motto for the day was: When life changes, God is good! We experienced a lot of change and God was good through it all.
There were more kinks throughout the week, but God showed up every time. Ask Melissa Dunlap about the tumble drums multiplying, or ask us about the offering for Haiti and how close the competition was when it
shouldn’t have been. We averaged 70 kids each day. 70 kids that got to hear about God and his goodness. 70 kids that had a safe place to go, friends to talk to, food to eat, and praises to sing. Thank you for being a church who supports VBS. It is a true blessing and we receive many compliments from outside our family about our program. Thanks for being a church who passes our VBS wealth onto a smaller church in Excelsior so that they can reach even more kids. Thanks for being a church that supports missions. This family is exceptional. Keep allowing God to work through you! When life is good, God is good!
